Creating a Whiteboard Animation

STEP ONE -  DRAFT STORYBOARD

It is useful to start the process with a brainstorming session with your team to think about the key points you want to communicate, the type of imagery you want to use, discuss how the animation will be used and what timeline you are working with. This session can be done in person or online.  Based on the information you want to communicate, I  will prepare a draft storyboard with words and pictures.  Some clients ask me to create a script based on a review of key materials and discussions with team.  Others prefer to give me their own script to work with.

Time required:

Script and storyboard – approx. 4 days (depending on complexity of the material).

Storyboard only (script provided) - 2 days

STEP TWO - FINALISE THE STORYBOARD BASED ON YOUR FEEDBACK

The storyboard development is an iterative process. Based on your feedback, I will fine tune the script, illustration style and overall presentation.  Usually 2 iterations are needed to be sure you are happy with the planned product.  It is a good idea to involve members of your target audience in this process to ensure that the images and text are appropriate and easily understood.

Time required:

Responding to you feedback takes approx. 1 day. This is often spread of over a few weeks, depending on how long your team requires to review the draft storyboards and give me feedback .

STEP THREE - FIRST DRAFT OF THE WHITEBOARD ANIMATION

I now create the final images, record the voiceover (if required) and share the animation with you.

Time required:

This  takes between 2 and 4 days depending on the length and complexity of the animation.

STEP FOUR - FEEDBACK AND FINE TUNING

Your team views the animation and gives feedback.  Small changes (e.g to text on screen etc) can be made at this stage. The software I use for animation is user-friendly and easy to edit, lending itself to an iterative development process.

Time required:

Usually 1 day or less, depending on how much feedback you have.

STEP FIVE - PILOTING

The animation can now be piloted with members of your target audience.  I will edit text and make adjustments to images based on their feedback.

Time required:

Usually 1 day or less, depending on how much feedback you have.

STEP SIX - ANIMATION IS READY TO SHARE

Once piloting and final edits have been completed, I will send you the final animation in a range of sizes (to be used with different communication mediums).  I can also provide you with jpeg or png or gif versions of all the individual images which you can use them in additional communication material.

FOLLOW UP

You can contact me at any stage if you need to edit or update your animation or if you would like to create different language versions.

FEEDBACK AND REFLECTION

I will contact you after 6 months (or an agreed period) to get feedback on the effectiveness of the animation. This opportunity to pause and reflect can provide valuable lessons that will help us support learning and communication better in the future.
